Winter riding: Spikes? Alloy wheel?

LOL, thanks for the info BSA. That is so crazy that it just might work! :stuck_out_tongue:

@Tom__: How are the Schwalbes working out for you?

Still waiting for them :frowning:

for the Mountainbike, the solution to keep going on slippery surface was to take an old bicycle chain and make it fit round the tire, than inflate the tire to stretch things up. Do the same on the other wheel and you have loads of grip, Not very good/elegant on the road, but super in deep snow…

Must work on srtida wheels too i guess

I’ve got an update on the tires. The Schwalbe Black Jack arrived today. I fitted the front tire and took some photos:

Still have to replace the freewheel. After that I am prepared for the next snow.

Your tires look very similar to these:

I hope the plastic is soft enough, because that’s the key for grip on snow.

Yeah, they are really soft.

btw Here is another thread on the forum about his voyages. I think he used different (maybe noname) tires for this trip.

@Tom__: I can’t wait for your first rider’s report! BTW, where did you buy the tyres?

Ordered them in a local bike shop.

A friend got the same tires an put them on his Strida 5.0. They fit, even with the fenders. But here is not much space between tire and fender.

Hej Striders,

I know that it is not the right time of the year,
but does anybody know more about that thingy? :open_mouth:

Found that accidentally at the picasa album of SiamStrida…

This looks reaaaallly cool !

Ha, discovered, that’s a Ktrak snow bike conversion kit!

ktrakcycle.com/
(Ktrak website offline or discontinued) :frowning:

Unfortunately, the reviews don’t sound too enthusiastic: forums.mtbr.com/fat-bikes/anyone … 51824.html

Which might explain why the website no longer exists.

Above mentioned thread (and the continuative links in it) explain that very well,

many thanks for your research StridaD!

Those jacks are like the schwalble big apples. But just a smidge larger. and they are both very close to the size of the 18 inch wheels I wonder how can you calculate the gear inches with this? feels very close to the 17 inch wheel size here but with alot more suspension.

There will be a different gear ratio depending on the surface.
On a plain asphalt surface the deep tread of the Blackjack cannot penetrate it and the gear ratio will be higher, on soft earthy roads it will be lower.
For this reason an accurate calculating will be impossible or rather senseless, I think.

According to Schwalbe’s website Blackjacks have 1,9" width and Big Apples 2,0".
So, for the theory, the gear ratio should be lower with Blackjacks :unamused:

Btw, the actual circumference of the Big Apple is ~ 1290 mm (measured with tape rule).

Thanks for that big apple circumference!

With that number I ran it through some circle formula to get the diameter and in the end big apples only give you 53.927 gear inches. just 0.6 gear inches more than a regular 16" diameter tire. While the 18 is still quite a big difference, guess I’m staying with my bigger wheels.

Maybe snow chains?

@Totte: Please would it be possible to re-upload the picture of your neatly snow-covered Strida?

This is much cheaper and appears to work very well:

Tie wraps are light & don’t make noise when you ride on hard surfaces.
