Install 16-inch rims on strida evo to avoid punctures

hello everyone,
this is my first post so please excuse me if I may not have followed the rules exactly.
I own a strida evo with 18 inch wheels but using it in Rome, where the roads are full of potholes and often full of glass shards, I get punctures far too often.
I’ve tried various solutions such as installing Kevlar bands inside the tyres, using Tubolito inner tubes or fitting Tannus tyres (which unfortunately do not match the 18-inch rims), but all to no avail.
So I arrived at the only solution for fitting puncture-proof tyres and that is to install 16-inch rims.
unfortunately i could only find them in red or brown plastic, but as i would like them in metal with spokes i was thinking of using the ones from this strida that you can see in the photos. do you think they are compatible and can be mounted on my strida evo instead of the 18 inch ones without any problems?

thank you very much.

Antonello

Hello Antonello,

welcome at Stridaforum

Principially, you can interchange the wheels between all original Strida versions (except the Strida Mini) without any problem.

Just, I’m afraid that the bike you’re showing is in fact a so-called SLO (Strida Like Object), the same version than that of @Amir_Yarrow.

You can find out if it is genuine easily; try first to change the front wheels. If things don’t match together it is certainly a fake one.

Compare all details with those of your EVO, I bet you find many differencies.

I look first at the rotors, calipers, bolt heads, shape of cranks, clamps at the seat molding etc.
Is there a number stamped at the underside of the bottom tube, close to the rear hinge?
What exactly says the writing on the belt?
Could you add images with close-ups of the left crank area (bottom bracket), the bolt which is securing the pan for the ball-joint, caliper and locking mechanism?
Did you already remove (or adjust) the seat molding?

Kind regards,

Chris

Hi Chris,
thank you for your reply.
it is a bike for sale on a classifieds site so before buying it I requested more information from the seller including the frame number.

I will update you as soon as I have any news.

in the meantime if you have any other solutions to my problem you are welcome.

Thanks

Ok, I see, thanks.

Well, if you want my personal opinion…
I’m sure that 100% flat safe tyres are not existent (meant are the common tyre and tube versions).
If the flats are your main priority - Tannus or similar tyres.
Tannus in 16" version do fit the Strida plastic rims, we tried that long ago at this bike:

I have still an unused wheel set of this type (with dark violet tyres) here, if you’re interested please pm me.

Hello Tony
I had the same problem - EVO 18 and puncturing of tires too often. There were Innova and Schwalbe Kojak tires, both of very poor longevity I must say.
I decided to put 16" EVO/SX wheels instead to solve that problem with bigger tires, the better amortization was in my mind too. It worked great with Schwalbe Big Apple 16" but there is a catch -
these 16" wheels are weaker than their 18" repalcement. They have weaker rim and less spokes in it. I have ridden about 2 years with 16" , never or almost never puncturing the tire. But the rear rim finally broke, propably due to the weight of mine and a topeak trunk bag with some shopping in it. Spokes were intact, the rim broke itself.
My riding is almost in strict uraban enviroment - Warsaw, Poland.
Finally I put 18" wheels back, put a Schwalbe Marathon Racer 40-355 (18x1.50) on them and I may finally say it is a nice compromise of durability of the tires and comfort of the ride. Puncturing has become very rare in my case. I am 185 and 80 kg weight by the way.
