New Strida owners

Hi everyone,
So glad to have found this forum, and I am enjoying looking through past messages.
We have just got 2x Strida’s from a friend who is a serial bicycle collector, and he was having a clear out, and we are loving the uniqueness if this wonderful bike.
They both have the Schlumpf hub gear and metal spoke 16" wheels.
One works, but the other is quite scratched up and does not have any folding pedals, rack or stand, and the tyres are in poor condition.
I have just bought the Strida Bended Steerer Kit ST-BDS-001 as my son is quite tall at 6’4" (193cm)…
Does anyone have the Topeak MTS Trunk bag, or recommend another pannier?
Cheers,
JP

Hello Japes,

welcome at Stridaforum

Oh…very rare…grant the drive some grease each year and it will last forever :+1: :sunglasses:

Wise decision, the knees of your son will be thankful

Have a safe ride guys,
best wishes,

Chris

Hi Japes,

Congrats

I have it and I would like to sell it. I can only recommend it if you want to attach it permanently because it require to attach velcro to the rack from the bottom. There are also some other DIY way to make placement/removal faster.
Nice thing about it :

  • it is not wide
  • the height is good
  • has good volume
  • good organization compartments
    Cons
  • does not look nice when carried
  • unpractical to carry on shoulder

I too am curious what kind of carrier/pannier bags Strida owners are using.
Schlumpf drive is very unusual. Please post photos if you like.

My post here could be relevant.

After trying many I recommend any good quality pannier rack backpack. My favorite is OAK25 (I can not guarantee quality):

https://www.amazon.de/OAK25-Pannier-Rack-Women-Black/dp/B0CLV2XP7T?ref_=ast_sto_dp&th=1&psc=1

pros
look elegant
does not add much width
very lightweight… only 700gm!!

cons
hard to fit wide stuff in

Hi Alaa,
Thanks for your thoughts - does your bag have the sides that unzip and then become thin side panniers?

Maybe yakitori and me should be more precise and say original Schlumpf drive…what do you think yakitori?

Anyway, here we have an ATS speed drive, a product licensed by Florian Schlumpf many years ago.
It is principially the same, just the quality is not equal to that of a Suisse Schlumpf original.
Also, the original drive was developed further and many details were improved over the years - the ATS is in the condition of a very early Schlumpf drive.

However - it should be mentioned that the, really excellent, Schlumpf documentation can be used for the ATS drive too.
With that manual it should be no problem to disassemble/assemble the drive when needed

Ah ok…

Where could I find this ATS documentation, and also a manual for the Strida - do we have the Strida 5.0?
Thank you!

Here’s Mr. Schlumpf’s actual page:
florianschlumpf.swiss

And here’s mentioned workbench manual:

The Strida manual can be found here:

STRIDA_General_Manual

…and I’d say yours are Strida SD (SD = speed drive), frame and everything else except drive is equal to the 5.0 (single speed)

Thank you so much for that information.

@AIA Thank you!

@Blackstridaaustria You are right.
But ATS Speed drive is also rare for me.
@Japes Thanks for the photos!

Yes this is the one. When unzipping both sides, the two compartments prevent side movement of the bag. Thus I always keep them unfolded. So what is needed then is just an anchor to prevent the bag from moving backwards. I usually don’t use the Velcro that come with the bag (very bad design decision). It is time consuming and inconvenient. Instead I attach it using carbineer to the metal part under the seat . I usually use two types of fasteners and two attachments points.
Why two? Because the laptop is in the bag and the idea of loosing it stress for extra caution.
