Strange tire problem with LT rim

I have twice now put a new tire on my LT rear rim. One tire was the stock Kenda tire, the other was a Schwalbe Marathon. Each time, I was unable to get the tire to sit 100% correctly in the rim.

In each case, a small part of the white stripe running around the circumference of the tire (approx. 5 cm in length) was not parallel to the rim. Instead, it was curved up and away from the rim, like a bump.

The tire was not bulging out … it was just “raised” out of the rim slightly. Somehow, the tire bead does not seem to be engaging with the groove properly.

On casual visual inspection, the rim does not seem to be bent or wobbly. Also, I tried rotating the tire to see if it was only one spot on the rim, but it occurred at different spots. But only in one spot at a time.

Has anyone heard of such a thing before? I never had this happen with the 5.x rim (or with any other bike rim, for that matter).

Thanks
StridaD

I always install and pump up tires on my Strida with the bike lying down, so the wheel is horizontal and no weight acting on the tire. Then when there is a tiny bit of air in (say 10psi) I check the tire is as even as possible (its rare for it to be perfect), then pump up more until its full.

Then for normal pump-ups the bike can be left standing up (unless the tire is completely flat again).

It’s been a few years since this was posted. Unfortunately, I’m running into the very same problem.

I installed two 16in Schwalbe Marathon on my Strida (dunno the version, got a used one). There is one such bump on each wheel. I remounted a few times to no avail. Well, instead of 40-305 I actually got 47-305 as the former is very hard to get. However, I can’t really imagine those 7mm in width being the problem.

Is it rather possible, that the rims are not accurately in measure?

Right now it’s quite a bumpy ride…

I should’ve read in this forum before I got the tires…

Hi enkay,

I bet you have the plastic wheels?

From my experience is 1,75" width exactly on the (floating) boarder of plastic wheels, some tyres fit - and some do not.
With metal spoked wheels, the boarder is just a little bit higher, some tyres with ~ 2" width do fit (example Schwalbe Big Apple) and some do not (Maxxis).

I know that’s weird, but we must live with it… :grimacing:

Correct. However, the tires are smaller, bump to the inside.

Did you try to use talcum powder?
There is also a good tyre mounting fluid from Schwalbe:

And you pumped up to maximum pressure?
(I believe the plastic wheels have a limit, it is printed somewhere on them.)
I can’t recommend to ride with this…

I used liquid soap and pumped up to 5bar.

Quite a bumpy ride. Luckily, roads are so terrible, too. Hard to tell, where the bumps come from.

Went to the local bike workshop. They improved the installation. It’s way less bumpy now.

I’m amazed about terrible roads in Germany to be honest.
However; that means 18" is no option for you, but maybe 16" metal (spoked) wheels (?)
